Jaffrelot, Christophe (2010). Religion, Caste, and Politics in India . Primus Books. p. 464. ISBN 978-93-80607-04-7 . The lower castes may have lent themselves to manipulations by political entrepreneurs like B.P. Mandal, but greater caste consciousness also implied a stronger rejection of vertical arrangements and a growing solidarity between lower caste MLAs from different parties. These phenomena had become so pronounced that to topple the SVD government the Congress had no other choice but to support one of the Shoshit Dal leaders; thus in February 1968 B.P. Mandal became the first OBC chief minister of Bihar.
Jaffrelot, Christophe; Kumar, Sanjay (2012). Rise of the Plebeians?: The Changing Face of the Indian Legislative Assemblies . Routledge . p. 76. ISBN 978-1-136-51661-0 . ...given the instability of the Samyukta Vidhayak Dal (SVD) due to coalition politics based on narrow political gains, the first non-Congress government fell in January 1968. Thus, a Congress-backed Shoshit Dal government was formed in February with Bindeshwari Prasad Mandal (a Yadav) as chief minister.
Mohan, R. (2025). India's Federal Setup: A Journey Through Seven Decades . Taylor & Francis . p. 50. ISBN 978-1-04-034657-0 . ...B.P. Mandal (Heath Minister, resigned and defected with 16 legislators) formed a political party called the Shoshit Dal and was sworn in as Chief Minister with the support of the Congress.
