NGC 3953（UGC 6870，PGC 37306）是大熊座的螺旋星系，属于M109星系团（该星系团包含了50余个星系）[3][4][5][6]。1781年3月12日，法国天文学家皮埃尔·梅尚发现了该星系[7]。

观测历史

梅尚在给梅西耶的信中提及到了NGC 3953，NGC 3992和M97。梅西耶将M97加入了自己的星表但并未纳入另外两个。不过几乎可以肯定的是，梅西耶观测过这个星系。在梅西耶的私人记录中，他对该星系做了描述并以NGC 3953的赤经和NGC 3992（M 109）赤纬记录了NGC 3953[7]。

超新星

天文学家在星系内共发现了两次超新星爆发：

  • 2001年8月12日，马尔科·米利亚尔迪（Marco Migliardi）和E·达尔·法拉（E. Dal Farra）发现了SN 2001dp。该超新星是Ia型超新星, 星等为14.5。[8]
